Votja Kinesitherapy

General overview

Neurologist V. Votja began to develop this method in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s, based on empirical trial and error, including the observation of "reflex" chains of movement in newborns. This technique has developed especially in Germany, in Munich, where the best practitioners are nowadays.

Main objectives of the method
  • This method aims, through the repeated triggering of "reflex" movement chains in the child by the therapist, to allow the brain to regain control of these muscle chains. In the long term, the aim is therefore to improve the child's mobility and to enable him to better control his body.

  • This method also improves the respiratory reflexes, those of the micturition physiology and defecation. Finally, in children with high spasticity and real difficulties to move by themselves, this method helps to prevent orthopaedic deterioration.

Specificities of the method

The therapist begins by first of all making an assessment of the child's motor development. Then, to enable him to develop his body's ability to control his body, he will use three central notions: the muscle chain, reflex locomotion and spawning. The idea behind the term "muscle chain" is that a muscular action is never localized, but participates in a larger chain of muscular movements that diffuse through the body.

Reflex locomotion expresses the idea that the nervous system is capable of triggering global (involving all parts of the body) and coordinated movements when certain body points are stimulated. Finally, spawning is the fact that the passage of a nervous flow between synapses becomes easier by repeating itself. Thus, by repetitively provoking "reflex" movements involving muscle chains, the therapist will not only make these reflexes faster, but will also improve the flow of nerve flow between synapses, eventually allowing the brain to send the message controlling these movements directly to the muscles, without the need for stimulation.

The neuro-physiological changes induced by spawning persist for some time after the work session, which is why the therapist trains the child's entourage to carry out the exercises, which must be repeated 3 to 4 times a day, in sessions of 15 to 20 minutes, in order to increase the frequency and duration of the effects.

Who is this method for ?

This method is intended for children with coordination disorders, cerebral palsy, hemiplegia, hemiparesis, brachial plexus, trisomy or motor retardation. But it is also intended for children with hip dysplasia, torticollis or positioning disorders (scoliosis etc).
The Votja method also improves respiratory functions, urinary physiology and defecation. It also prevents orthopaedic deterioration.

Votja sessions are physiotherapy sessions and are therefore reimbursed by the social security.

What parents say about it

Young children do not experience pain, but babies can cry, which can be distressing.
